Hi All,
Yours truly was hit by a car yesterday afternoon while returning from a solo ride to Glen Cove, on W Rogues Path at Oakwood Rd. I had just started to proceed east on W 11th St, WITH THE GREEN LIGHT, when a left turning car, apparently blinded by the low sun in the west (as he explained to the police), decided to plow into me. Fortunately, he hit the rear of the bicycle and not me per se. Nevertheless, down I went. He actually stopped to see if I was dead or alive and was very apologetic. Still, laying there on my back in the middle of Oakwood Road, I decided to “instruct” him on the fact that left turns must yield to straight moves through an intersection, end of discussion.
I also decided that, even though nothing specifically hurt me (I could feel my fingers and toes) I was going to “create a scene” and not move until EMS showed up. The police arrived first (there was an RMP sitting on W Rogues west of Breezy Park looking to catch speeders) and he showed up first. So I got carted off to Huntington Hospital and the police brought my bicycle home and presented same to Marie, who happened to be home. Boy, was she surprised! The police officer who initially responded checked into the ER to hand me back my ID and give me the completed accident report. I checked out okay in the ER and was discharged. I needed to ice a couple of bumps on my legs and took an Advil.

Jeff, To know that riding in a group is much, much safer, is knowledge we can’t always apply. Today near the end of my ride with the C.O.M. I needed to be home before a 1 PM because of a house showing and then get out of the house during it. I soloed home from Half Hollow Rd and then to the VA in Northport. A total of over 15 miles solo. So when necessary you do it. But yes, BE CAREFUL OUT THERE! And take no chances or short cuts.
Hope the soreness and aches are short lasting.
