Gavaria positive for corona

Colombian sprint star Fernando Gaviria is the latest confirmed victim of coronavirus in the pro peloton.

Just days after Dmitry Strakhov (Gazprom Rusvelo) was the first rider confirmed to have contracted coronavirusHet Laatste Nieuws has reported that Gaviria has been in hospital in Abu Dhabi with the virus for the past two weeks.

Gaviria had been racing at the UAE Tour before the race was canceled two stages early due to rumors of coronavirus.

The entire country of Italy is under quarantine and major races there have been cancelled or rescheduled. Paris-Nice is still happening, but the immediate future of other races remains uncertain.

“This is all new, but we have to find a way to not collapse everything,” Deceuninck-Quick-Step sport director Tom Steels told VeloNews. “The classics, the Giro, everything is uncertain.”
