New Hauppauge Routes (3) in Ride with GPS
Jeffrey Erlitz
Hi All,
This evening I uploaded three Hauppauge routes that I had never gotten around to doing before. These were entered from old paper cue sheets that John Greene had scanned a while ago. It turns out that today’s “C” ride to Hauppauge (which had erroneously been entered as “Happauge”) had, apparently, not been done in a very long time. I certainly never remembered riding this particular route. This route actually had about 3/4 mile on dirt trails through Blydenburgh and Caleb Smith Parks that were not even fit for hybrid bikes, let alone road bikes. We had no choice but to walk our bikes through, which was actually fine and quite interesting. I recommend hiking on those trails, it was beautiful. Also, at a certain point, the dirt trail entered upon an old paved road (the original Old Willets Road, actually) which we were supposed to take to get to the current Old Willets Rd. Unfortunately, there is a gate at the old entrance and it’s always locked shut. Heading the other way, the old road simply ended at an open entrance on Jericho Tpke. The total “diversion” was only a little over one mile. In any case, there are now three different routes to Brendel’s Bagels in Hauppauge, ranging in distance from 25 to 40 miles. I take it that the old “Hauppauge Bakery” is where Brendel’s Bagels is now on Wheeler Road??? Best, Jeff |
