Smith Street Lot Today

Gerald Widen <Gerry_w@...>

There was barely anyone at the lot today.  No C, C+ or B riders. The only B+ riders were Matt and myself.

There were 3 A+ riders that must have arranged to ride at 8a via email. They offered Matt and I to join them but there was no way we could keep up with them on their ride to Stoney Brook.

Matt and I rode to Center Island and Bayville and I can’t recall seeing more groups out riding.

Multiple groups from Massapequa, 2 large groups from Mineola including what appeared to be a C+ level group and 2 from the LIBC. Also many groups of different sizes I couldn’t identify. About 4-5 riders said hello to me in passing.

I know out in Suffolk the SBRA had 11 scheduled rides today and only 5 tomorrow because today was the better day.

My point here is being the only bike club on Long Island without scheduled rides isn’t working.

Maybe it works for those that secretly organize rides via email that eliminates the rest of the club members works for that select few.

Basically in my view anyone planning to go out to the lot to try to join a ride will most likely be riding solo. Be prepared with extra tubes and CO2

I don’t understand why the HBC is the only club on LI without scheduled rides and probably in the Metropolitan area as well. What do we know that no other club doesn’t seem to understand?

I agree with you, club is sitting on their hands, you should post this on the HBC FB page.

Hi. I was one of the other groups that you probably couldn't identify. I saw you on Center Island today. Matt was wearing the HBC Jersey, and I yelled out HBC.

Yes,  I led an NYCC ride to Center Island today because I'm not going to drive all the way out  to Huntington and find that there is no ride or no riders showing up at my level. Show n go doesnt work for me so although I would prefer to ride with HBC, I make other more definite plans.

There is a link to the HBC Board meeting minutes on the Club website homepage. The board discussed opening rides sometime in August. A notice was also posted on the HBC Facebook page indicating the minutes were posted as well.

My understanding these emails are for club members only,  I could be wrong about that.

The FB page has a lot of people following that are not club members and if all this is true I don’t want to publicly air our dirty laundry.

Yes we all saw that. Bottom line we are already at least a month behind ALL of the other groups on Long Island and counting not in days or weeks but served notice now in months.

As mentioned some select club members are by passing the “show and go” and organizing apart from the rest of the members. I don’t see that as being good club citizens.

The rest of us are mostly riding with other groups and clubs.

That can’t be good as I’ve noticed the past couple of years while the club membership is probably stable the number riders showing up at the lot every weekend has been dwindling . The present situation can’t possibly be helping.

Can I make a strong recc the HBC Facebook group be moved to PRIVATE.
A private group is for people that belong only and is not used for promotional reasons.
In most cases, especially for an org like HBC a Facebook group would be private.

In addition sometimes when a member of a public FB group posts a message, all of their friends see their posts even if those friends are not in the group. THis keeps people from posting and being involved as well.

I was in a public group for an educational app company and when they moved to private (they were worried at first), but their member numbers doubled AND the posts doubled as those in the closed private group felt safer and knew it was only for members.

Just my suggestion!

I’ve been a club member on and off for a number of years and have never gone on a group ride yet. I thought this year I would take the leap but so far HBC has just been a social club. I will not wait around all week for a possible meet up in a parking lot.

I want to know where, how fast and how far I’m going in advance. Even SBRA B+, A-and A riders are doing their own organizing because of all the new rules. If you’re uncomfortably riding in a group, ride solo or stay home. I have no interest in using Facebook to look for rides. HBC has a website use it. Just another opinion.

NYS Department of Health reported that there were THREE fatalities due to Covid-19 yesterday in the entire  State of New York.  Thats 3 out of 19,700,000 people.  Almost as many bicycle sccident related fatalities  occur in the United States each day.
